(2) He can cover a distance of 84 miles downstream in 6 hours.
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient but Statement (2) ALONE is not sufficient. B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient but Statement (1) ALONE is not sufficient. C. It takes 3.5 hours for Mathew to row a distance of X miles up the stream. Find his speed in still water.
(1) It takes him 2.5 hours to cover the distance of X miles downstream.
(2) He can cover a distance of 84 miles downstream in 6 hours.
statement 1 gives us his speed downstream so it is not sufficient as X is not known.
from statement 2, we can deduce that since it takes 6 hours to cover 84m downstream, in 2.5 hours the distance coevered will be 2.5*84 / 6 = 35miles so x=35 miles. from this we can find the speed in still water. Hence both statements are required.
